An Elevation Certificate is an actual field survey by a licensed professional surveyor. The elevation compares house and building elevations to the local flood elevation as determined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Elevations are certified by a licensed surveyor if the elevation certificate is intended to support an application for a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) or a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) -- based on Fill. These letters are used to modify findings of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). You can get more information at: http://www.fema.gov/business/nfip/elvinst.shtm. A (LOMA) or (LOMR) confirms that a site is or is not within a flood hazard area. Elliott Survey Company can assist the property owner with preparation of the necessary application and forms which must be submitted to FEMA. The FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) utilizes state-of-the-art technology to determine ground elevations and estimate the location of floodplains for major streams and arroyos in New Mexico. However, the maps do not show details for an individual home. Many citizens in New Mexico have reduced the cost of their flood insurance by obtaining an Elevation Certificate or eliminated their flood insurance requirements by submitting a (LOMA) for their property to FEMA. If the first floor elevation of your home is located above the Base Flood Elevation, then providing an Elevation Certificate to your insurance agent or mortgage company may result in significant savings.
